Little holes from sewing on the rings

I have recently make some flat roman shades for a friend.  They are made with a cotton stripe fabric and lined with blackout lining.  There are 6 rows across and 5 rings down, that I
hand sewed ( I did not use the ring tape).  When I went to install the
shades you could see where I had sewed all the rings on The sunlight shined
through.  I have remade them over again with a regular lining and you can still see
little holes where the rings have been sewed on.  I am at a complete
loss with this.  My friend is not happy with this and neither am I.  Do you
have any suggestion or will your book be able to assist me with this.

The nature of thread tacking through fabric WILL leave a tiny hole in your fabric.

There are ways to minimize this effect, but every type of fabric is different.

  1. If holes of light are truly a concern, use a thinner needle when sewing on the rings.

  2. Try catching fewer threads when sewing the rings on to the shade.

  3. Sew the shades with interlining. The thickness it creates will help to eliminate light leaks.

  4. Make a relaxed shade and sew the rings along the side hems instead of in the middle of the shade.

  5. Sew a slatted roman shade by sewing rod pockets at each row of rings and then sewing the rings to the back of the rod pockets.
